Symbol of Fish at Baptismal Font:  Many people have asked what does the symbol of the fish mean?   In the early Church in Rome, the new Christians were subjected to the most horrific persecutions.  They devised ingenious ways of recognising one another in the hostile atmosphere through the use of symbols.  From the second century, Christians used the fish as a popular Christian symbol.  It was found in the catacombs.  After all, the apostles were fishermen, and fish occur frequently in the Gospels.  When Jesus wanted to feed the multitude in the desert, Andrew introduced the boy with the five loaves and the two fishes.  The miracle of the loaves and fishes resulted and this in turn was seen as a pointing to the Eucharist.  But probably the main reason why the fish became so popular in Christianity was the realisation that the Greek word for fish was ixOus.  The letters, as an acronym, stood for Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour.  So when Christians saw the sign of the fish, they recognised they were among friends and fellow Christians.
