Crumlin Children’s Hospital Mount Everest Trek:  On 18th Oct. this year Shane Flannery will embark on a trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp accompanying Ken Lucas, to raise much needed funds for Crumlin Children’s Hospital.  Shane has a number of sponsorship cards in business premises around the town.  Any support would be greatly appreciated.

Church Restoration:  Many people have been asking when work will begin on our Church.  We had hoped to have begun work in Sept., but due to concerns from the planning authority this was not possible.  A decision is due this coming week.  Once we have our decision we will be in a position to give you full details about the church closure and where we will have our Masses.

West Offaly Comhaltas branch are delighted to announce that we are host to the Comhaltas All Ireland Music Tour on Thursday October 25th in Banagher College. The Tour showcases all that’s best in Irish traditional entertainment for audiences at home and abroad. The performers, in all fields, display the high standards and regional styles that have become synonymous with these events down through the years. Tickets for this event are available to purchase from any branch of Offaly Comhaltas and are priced at €10 and €15.

Wood Turning Class:  Co. Offaly VEC Community Education Service will run a 6 week wood turning course in St. Rynagh’s College of Further Education in Banagher. Monster Auction:The proposed new Banagher Youth Facility are well advanced in their plans to provide a dedicated youth facility for Banagher and surrounding area. We are in the process of raising funds to meet our contribution to the buildings costs. A Monster Auction will take place on Sat. 29th Sept. in the industrial units, Lusmagh Road at 2 p.m. If you have any items you would like to donate for the auction you can contact Fr. Pierre or one of the committee members, their names are on the flyers you should have received in your letterbox or you can check the poster in the town.

Banagher Tidy Towns gets best result in years.  Banagher gained an impressive increase in this year’s Tidy Towns competition jumping from 264 to 271 gaining points in seven of the ten categories. The judging this year was on the 2nd July and we had one visit. Since then we have completed a number of varies projects to include in next year’s application and are now preparing a winter plan.  We hope to present the results achieved this year at a public meeting early in October and would appreciate if as many as possible would attend and bring along any ideas or plans you may have to help improve your area or the town for next year’s competition. We will also be launching a Best Residential Area, Business Front and Best kept Private Residence competition for 2013 in the town. We also wish to congratulate neighbouring towns and villages for their great increase in marks for this year. Ferbane 262, Cloghan 257, Shannon Harbour 241 and Birr 266.

FETAC Level 4 General Studies Programme:  Co. Offaly VEC, in conjunction with Offaly Local Development Company will run a FETAC Level 4 General Studies Programme in Birr this Autumn. This Programme provides learners with the opportunity to improve their communication, maths and IT Skills. The programme is aimed at those who have completed an Inter/Junior Cert or a FETAC Level 3 Certificate. The Programme will run for 2 mornings per week (Monday & Tuesday) in Birr Outdoor Education Centre commencing 1st Oct. Subjects covered will include Computer Applications, Maths, IT Skills, Work Experience, Communications and Health Related Fitness. Heidi’s Restaurant & Coffee Shop will reopen in Crank House Banagher on Fri. 7th Sept. from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. Heidi and her staff are looking forward to welcoming back all the customers and wish to apologise for any inconvenience caused when the restaurant had to close recently for a number of weeks due to fire damage.

Children’s Drama and Art Clubstarts on Wed. 19th of Sept. from  4.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.  in St Rynagh’s Adult Education Centre, Banagher. The club is open to children  5-7 years and 8-12 years. The club will combine all aspects of drama and theatre with the visual arts. It’s the ideal after school activity that will encourage your child’s creative side and confidence.
